Vlog 130: National Treasure
The third and final part (for the moment) in this mini-series about unusual, rare and vintage narrowboat engines. Here we meet Keith Lodge who had a replica working boat built to his specification including a two-cylinder National DA2 engine from 1949.

You have more than likely seen this… , but here is a Bollinder for you to revel in the glory of Mr Johns
Hi!
How much do you think a National DA2 engine is worth? I’ve just inherited one out of a canal boat but not sure if it’s worth anything?
Thank you,
Sam
It depends what condition it’s in but someone somewhere will definitely want to have it. There is probably a National Owners / Enthusiasts Group I’d imagine, or at least a “vintage narrowboat engines” Facebook page you could mention it on.
When I was in the Merchant Navy in the early 1970’s, I sailed on one ship which had National engines on the main generators. These were 6 cylinder engines which I think were about 250kW, but I could be wrong about this. They were certainly 110V DC though. I can’t recall having any bother with them.
The emergency generator was driven by a Belliss and Morcom compound steam engine!
I like the sound of that backup generator!
