The third annual Electrika show was held again at Brinklow marina in mid-July but rather than film flashy boat tours, I thought I’d take the opportunity to challenge experts and exhibitors about how safe we are having lithium batteries aboard, as these are widely used on electric narrowboats but you cannot help but see worrying stories about battery fires.
I don’t care how many safeguards they put in place, electricity around water is a time provenbad idea. If you want to get back to quiet boating, by yourself a shire horse.
I can hear the arguments to my comment now, but that is my opinion, and opinion of many others too..
But all canal boats have electricity on them anyway, just some do it with different types of batteries.
Hi David, Paul Sumper is correct. LiFePO4 batteries are much more stable than Lithium-Ion batteries. They are in wide use in Amateur Radio. They are also much less susceptible to damage caused by dropping. Hopefully, the insurers, BMS folks and installers will come through for boat owners in the coming times!! Cheers
