Vlog 128: Rusty Newbolt
This is Part 1 of a three part mini-series about classic / vintage narrowboat engines as often heard chugging past on the canal. In this episode, I talked to Chris Wenham aboard NB Herbert about his Russell Newbury engine. He tells me why he bought it, why he likes it so much – and how much polishing it needs!

This engine is truly the Cat’s Pajamas. I would be very proud to own such a fine boat, great care has gone into this one.
Hi David,
I LOVE your vlogs and I “cruise” with you vicariously almost every evening. Wondering about getting groceries. Do the little stores along the canals “price gouge?” Can you get fresh veggies and such easily? Please keep sharing your vlogs!
Hello. Thanks for the compliment. The small shops certainly do charge more although whether you’d class it as “gouging” I don’t know; they have higher costs and fewer customers than a major supermarket so the higher prices are to be expected. Of course, there’s no reason not to pause the boat within reach of a bigger shop in many places and do a large stock-up there :-)
Loved it. David you are going from strength to strength. Great to see such a magnificent engine. Bet he was a squaddie…
Thank you!
As usual another great vlog. Always look forward to the next one.
Thanks Roberta :-)
Great to have some discussion on traditional engines, excellent, its what a real narrowboat is all about
Fantastic coverage of a truly unique and eye appealing boat David, well done ! I’m sure there is never a shortage of compliments for this vessel.
Try Tim at inland camping he has a narrow boat called William who has a Bollinger just out side weedon
Great! Thank you.
