At the end of May 2021, I attended a narrowboat trials day arranged by boat builder Ortomarine. Starting on the River Severn and going up the Droitwich canals, eight boats using a variety of power plants would have their fuel, efficiency and any solar input measured and compared. A quick bonus vlog! Having popped back to my childhood home of Droitwich for my sister’s birthday and a family meal, I was also able to pop down to the canal as that weekend saw the annual St Richard’s Festival being held in which narrowboats converge on Vines Park and sell all kinds of wares from their boats on the towpath, with other sellers in marquees in the park.

After 48 hours on the visitor mooring at Netherwich Basin in Droitwich Spa, I reversed my path up the Droitwich Barge Canal and headed back out downstream on the River Severn. I went through Worcester, past Upton-on-Severn and into the River Avon at Tewkesbury, having executed dramatic overtaking manoeuvres. battled loose logs and coped with any army of tiny spiders.

Moving the narrowboat from the top of lock 2 on the Droitwich Barge canal (near Hawford Junction) and up to Droitwich Spa itself. I end up on the visitor moorings at Netherwich basin and go for a walk around Vines Park.

At last there’s a sunny day and despite the wind it’s time to take the narrowboat off the canal and onto the mighty River Severn. Eventually I’ll go to Tewkesbury but today it’s only to the entrance of the Droitwich Barge Canal at Hawford Junction.
