Vlog 150: Wending my way
Having turned around at Cowroast, my narrowboat journey on the Grand Union canal now continued north but with a diversion down the short length of the restored Wendover Arm. The navigable canal is only about 1.5 miles long so far and I found it quite narrow and shallow but quite scenic. I moored right at the far end where there’s a large winding hole. Then I went back up the Arm and down the Marsworth locks before pausing one lock before the end of the flight.

Bulbourne pronounced “Boobunn” locally and although you didn’t mention Startops Reservoir that is pronounced “Starrups”. Great video again, thanks David.
The pronunciation of English place names never fails to baffle…
Hello David, running through your vlogs again. I know the Wendover Arm very well as I lived just to the side of the canal in the 1950’s. The large industrial building you ask about is a flour mill and has been there since the early 20th century and is still producing flour. As young lads we would walk along the towpath to where the dried up section began. There were at least two old working barges sunk there against what was an old lock. Happy days. We attended until a few years ago the Wendover Arm Trust boating weekend on our first narrow boat. Many thanks for cruising along there.
I very much enjoyed my little trip along the Arm and a nice quiet spot to moor at the end too!
A most beautiful spot to moor at the Winding Hole in the Wendover Arm. When I see grassy places like this, I think how much fun it would be to fly a Radio Control 2 Meter Glider using a High Start for launch. A perfect place for Glider landings.
The Wendover arm look a lovely peaceful place to spend a few days. Are there any shops reasonably near where you spent the night?
As to your question; looking at the silos, and the fact it seems a rural sort of area, I would hazard a guess that it has something to do with grain. A flour mill perhaps? That’s my theory anyway,
There was nothing around for miles as far as I could tell at the end of the arm! But stocked up, it would indeed be a lovely place to stop. I’ve had lots of comments on YouTube about the silos and it is indeed a flour mill! Cheers
There is a Tesco supermarket in nearby Tring, about 1 mile away.
