Vlog 144: Sign o’ the Thames
At the start of September 2018 I joined Jo and Michael of “Minimal List” (see channel link below) as well as London Boat Girl, Lorna, and we went on a rather exciting and interesting voyage up the tidal river Thames from Limehouse lock to Teddington.
Narrowboats are not at all designed for any swirly waters so the choppiness of the tidal Thames around Limehouse, London Bridge and the Houses of Parliament makes for an interesting – and wobbly – experience which requires confidence and a steely hand on the tiller, all of which Michael has in spades.

Haha so there is! I never noticed that before.
Scarey stuff, eh? Well done to you all and rather you than me with all those water buses roaring past. We had Tower Bridge opened for us last week going under on the paddle steamer Waverley. Beautiful at night!
That sounds amazing!
Just watched Jo and Michael’s version. I enjoyed yours best and your sound and commentary are very good. It was interesting to see shots of your filming. Keep up the good work
Thank you, Iris!
Is the Channel next?
Haha certainly not!
For some time now I’ve enjoyed your vlog very much. It remembers me of so many wonderful (if sometimes quite strenuous or even a bit frightening) experiences in my many years of restoring, outfitting, and sailing boats. Thank you.
In July 2004, on our way from Dutch Friesland to Müritz lake in Eastern Germany with our 1975 built Valkvlet „Pylades“, we overtook two narrowboats eastward bound on the Mittellandkanal: „Rosy“, register no. SSR 89663, in company with a second one I can’t identify on my old fotos. We had known narrowboats from a Themse trip in 1967 from Thames Ditton to Marlow, but never seen one on the continent, and wondered how they could have managed crossing the Channel.
Perhaps, somebody recalls that narrowboat adventure. If there is a way to show the fotos, please tell me.
Thank you for the memories Michael! I’m glad you enjoy the vlog. Unfortunately there is no way to upload any photos in the comments. Cheers
Another wonderful video David. Who ever gets tired of seeing Tower Bridge and Big Ben? I was walking along the Thames just over a year ago and the maintenance on Big Ben was just beginning. Thank you for sharing the sights and ambiance of London and the Thames with us ;)
Cheers, it was all quite the most splendid sight!
The galleon in question is a full scale reproduction of Sir Francis Drake’s ship The Golden Hinde.
Loved the vlog and always looking forward to the next one.
Thanks Phil, glad you liked it.
