Vlog 362a: Full Throttle
This is a “bonus” video, extra content that’s a bit of a shambles but might be of interest to some viewers who like technical stuff. I recorded myself trying to diagnose and fix the throttle linkage issue on my narrowboat (basically that the throttle would not return to idle without also disengaging the gearbox, whereas I needed the engine to run at idle while still in gear) and it’s very much a “stream of consciousness” recording rather than a how-to or any kind of tutorial.
If you hate this one, don’t worry, the next video is my first actual cruise on the narrowboat so just like the good old “Cruising the Cut” days.
Correct me if I mis-heard here at the end, but do you really want the engine to idle in gear? Surely it should idle in neutral, or I have I totally not understood? Um?
Yes I need it to idle in gear. When one is cruising past moored boats, it is etiquette to do so only at tickover ie the slowest possible speed. Therefore one needs to be able to be in gear at idle speeds. Obviously you can then also choose to switch to neutral if you need not to be moving.
Interesting that the trunnions are brass (obviously a soft metal). I would have thought something like stainless steel, but if you can get 20 someodd years out of them, not too bad. Carry on David. Really enjoyed this video.
Cheers Jim, the story will continue on these, I am sure.
David,
We enjoyed your Morse Control video, in particular the way you started at one end of the cables, then worked your way to the other end “engine side” of the cables to fix the problem. You appear to be a patient man and your knowledge about mechanical issues is amazing. Thank you for sharing and we are anxious to see you out on the canals in your new watercraft.
Thank you, the first cruising video is about to go “live”!
