Vlog 326: Spaghetti Hoops
This is a follow-on from the previous video where I began to strip out the carpeting and wiring from my boat refurbishment project, named Twiggy (a 1975 Microplus 600) – here I continue to delve into the rats nest of wires behind the steering console as well as start pulling down the ceiling carpet.

Hi David, I’m pretty sure this strange connection thingy on your dashboard is a light fitting. Probably an indication that the power is switched on. I suppose it used to be an led bulb, they take virtually no power so these flimsy wires were sufficient. Nevertheless nothing vital.
Anyway, lovely to follow the process like this, I thoroughly enjoy your trains of thought and the whole discovery process.
So keep up the good work, live to feel part of it. Be safe, kind regards, Jobim
Hello! Thank you, that seems a feasible suggestion of what it was. Glad you’re enjoying it!
You’re going to have so much ‘fun’ sorting out what wire goes where and does what! As an ex-RAF ‘sparks’ the state of the wiring was a bit worrying! When you’ve sorted it keep it nice and tidy with proper labelling, but I’m sure you know that anyway.
Can’t wait for the next episode! This is more entertaining that your narrowboat!
One thing I am terribly bad at is labelling!!
Hey, David!
Not riveting! Who are you kidding!
It looks like the thing on the dash with the tiny wires was some kind of “micro connector.” Maybe it was an outlet for a small removable LED light? Like for reading a map at night? Although why wouldn’t you just turn on the cabin lights? Also, aren’t there rules about night traveling on the canals? But maybe night movement is ok on rivers? (I know you covered this in a CtC video, but I can’t remember the rules.)
Anyway, glad you just removed most of that wiring because the whole time I was thinking “Just take it all out and start from scratch.”
The carpet backer board looks like some kind of press board, because the back of pegboard (at least in the US) looks exactly like that texture, presumably from the screen used during manufacture to press the material against that lets water flow out.
I wonder if small magnets would have enough oomph to hold the new carpet up? Or maybe use fabric rather than carpet, at least on the ceiling?
Sorry for the ramble! Looking forward to the next thrilling installment!
Greetings from Virginia, USA.
Hahaha glad it was riveting! There aren’t rules as such about night travel, it can just be onconsiderate if you’re noisy or crash into people…
The board backing David is what is known as ‘hard board’. Cheers
Barry in the Fens.
And for your American viewers – the Fens is an area of Norfolk – UK not USA!
Morning David!
The two holes in the grey thing [with the very thin +ve and -ve wires] look like the twin holes for a small 10watt halogen light bulb to be pushed in and as they come directly off the main battery connector may be a light showing when the power is switched on?? There must’ve been a red or green clear cover screwed onto the grey baseplate at some time so it glowed red or green?
Love your vlogs!
Chris
I think you may well be right. Ah well, it’s disconnected now and I will fill in the hole.
