Vlog 73: Talking Turkey
It’s Christmas time and there’s nothing finer than a slap up roast for lunch. Unfortunately I can’t cook but pal Expert Gary from Yelvertoft Marina is a dab hand in the kitchen. He, his wife Carol, plus boating friends Myra and Adrian came over to my boat and cooked up the full works in a cramped galley. This is how they did it.
Beautiful Christmas dinner. Wish I was invited.
Great way to spend the holiday.
If electric oven, pref. fan oven, cover said bird in foil with little water in pan. Place in hot oven and add bread tin etc. with half full of boiled or hot tap water. Cook as instructed. You will then get a very tender chicken/turkey . Just to add, just before adding your pots & parsnips remove bread tin and steam in oven. !5 minutes before serving remove foil. I do not like chicken skin.
DANGER DANGER, I have no idea if you can steam up a gas oven as above as it may stop a safe burning gas flame!
One easy Pudding/sweet even you can make David:-
You will need: ginger biscuits, dry sherry, whipped double cream, one plate & dish.
Dip each ginger biscuit in dry sherry and “butter” some cream on one side. Repeat with next biscuit and stick to first biscuit, continue making a long log. You can make it as long as you wish and even add a side branch to it. Then cover the whole lot in double whipped cream. Place in fridge for 24 hours to improve texture and taste. Do NOT dip biscuits for to long or your biscuit will fall apart and/or mess up the cream.
It is not that you can not cook. You may wish to leave it to others at times.
I do not like cooking. It is boring day after day. Cheers to Christmas Lunch.
Why not buy yourself a light bicycle second hand, and head to the hills on your boat tours for fitness & vlog specials. Video climb of Holme Moss http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qC5bxWMwLu0.
What a meal. Proof cooking on a narrowboat is possable.
May i ask 2 questions:
I have tried to find a turkey cushion at most big name outlets
can you advise me where to get one:?
Is musical chairs with the turkey a narrow boaters tradition?
Wishing you a happy new year and happy blogging
Hello Commander. Congratulations on your New Year promotion once again. You can find turkey cushions online at http://www.TurkeyCushionsRUs.com
And yes, we do indeed play that game but remember it’s a requirement that the turkey is first slathered in gravy and no bibs are to be worn.
Happy New Year!
I wish I had watched Gary BEFORE my efforts, at least I now know how to make the BEST roast pots, they looked lovely. Well done to all concerned and no rows as so often happens :-)) My very best wishes to you all for 2017…
M.
Cheers; they were indeed delicious! Happy new year.
Well done Gary and friends. Hope you all had an enjoyable festive break.
Thank you. Yes, very much so. Hope yours was good too.
Don’t think Jamie Oliver has anything to worry about
Merry Christmas David and your crew that was great. So next Christmas I hope you will be doing the cooking and the welding. Cheers Doug.
I quite fancy doing a welding course. But I’ll leave the cooking to Expert Gary! Merry Christmas.
A great Christmas blog David. Well done mate. All happiness
Thank you. Best wishes to you as well. Cheers.
Absolutely wonderful episode
Learned some helpful cooking tips
Plus you have given me the confidence to try my hand at Yorkshire pudding! I love it but have never tried to make it myself
Please consider more cooking episodes on narrowboats
Merry Christmas David

I don’t do cooking, that’s the whole point!! This is my one and only cooking vlog, unless Expert Gary has any more meals up his sleeve… Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers!

Thanks Keith. Best wishes to you.
